Hello and welcome to Memory Card. Here, we embark on one final–maybe even fatal–playthrough of the forgotten games of our past. Much like the past it’s possible that we’ll pull some all nighters, we might lose a friend or two or we could end up having too much Hot Pockets. Let’s take a look at how far we’ve come. Or perhaps we’ve fallen back.
The early years of the aughts, as the world wide internet set the world of gaming with LAN parties, a new kind of experience that was fantasy came to light: the MMORPG (or Massive Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game, for you noobs.
There were games such as World of Warcraft or Guild Wars which let you chat and quest with people from all over, and all you required was a decent internet connection to do it. My most favorite alternative was RuneScape, a game that included me and my friend teaming up to slay the Corporeal Beast, learn to cook monkfish in a stunning way, and play a few rounds of Gnome Ball.
That time of coming back from school, and then hopping onto our shared computers, and later our personal computers, but keeping our bedroom doors open to shout strategies or ask for gold among the most enjoyable times I was fortunate enough to experience growing up.
I’ve occasionally kept up with RuneScape over the years to ensure my account from the year 2005 was still active, that I received a phone call from a friend of mine in my *Gamer Squad*, which simply read, “I want to play RuneScape,” that I decided to embark on my path to Gielinor.
Like any excellent MMO the goal in RuneScape will vary from player to player. Maybe you want to complete each and every one of the over 200 quests that will earn you Legendary Hero status. Maybe you’d like mastering each of those 28 abilities to earn the famed Skill Mastery cape. You might want to earn billions flipping items at one of the Grand Exchanges.
You could be an asshole and go kill playing players in the wilderness, too. And that’s not even including the mini-games or world events, battles, holidays, and duels. It’s no surprise that the event is huge. And it’s clear Jagex has not ever stopped from updating Gielinor. There’s no shortage of fresh game titles, including Buy RuneScape Gold Mobile, which launches July 17.
